The Ethiopia Mapping Agency (EMA) Geo- information services
The Ethiopia Mapping Agency (EMA) was established in 1954 as a unit within the
ministry of education. Since its establishment, it has been providing services
in mapping surveying, geodesy cartography and remote sensing, photogrammetry
and other related geo -information field for the last half - century. EMA is
the sole legal autonomous federal government surveying and mapping organization
(in remotely sensed data, acquisitions and processing geodetic networks,
topographic maps, aerial photography and other related geo-information). EMA
has the a large archive of aerial photographs Remotely sensed data and
topographic maps.
EMA is awarded by the international society for photogrammetry and remote
sensing (ISPRS) for applying and promoting geo information science in the
continent. In addition, there are many awards and letters of appreciation and
recognition from different national, regional and international geo information
associations (surveying, remote sensing, cartography and etc). EMA, to up keep
up date and enhance its competitiveness in geo information science, is a member
of many national regional and international geo information photgrametry and
remote sensing association.
Because of the current advancement in digital technology and edge-cutting information
system the demand for geo information system, the demand of Geo information has
been escalating to cope up with the user demand and queries of the day EMA has
made substantial investment for digital geo information processing facilities
including local and wide area networking among its different department. The
process further include flow-line digital data out put processing, national
geo-database management, map production training and consulting. The sole
base line data source for topographic and thematic maps like:
1:2000000,1:1000000,1:250000,1:50000,1:10000,1:2000 and related geo information
in Ethiopia is the Ethiopian Mapping Agency.
Since 1980, EMA has been giving a six-month annual training advanced certificate
course on mapping and geo information.
Available software of EMA includes:
Consulting on all geo-information mapping related techniques.
For the above and similar activates the EMA has got five specialized and networked technical
department. They are:
Surveying
for establishment, maintenance and identification, horizontal and vertical
geodetic control points (GCPs), topographic and engineering surey, electronic
data processing, and optical instrument maintenance.
Remote Sensing and GIS
for digital and analogue image processing andinterpretation for the application of natural resources
management, impact assessment, map revision, environment system monitoring and change assessment,
agriculture, geological, hydro- geological, early waring system, and food
security.
Mapping
- For national topographic and thematic mapping and, urban development maps,
Aeronautical charts production, specification and standardization of map,
geographic names coordinates (gazetteer) database, atlas preparation, maps,
maps revision and etc.
- For photo masicing, orthopoto maps production, DEM generation, aerial
triangulation etc.
- Reprography for aerial photographs archiving data
acquisition, positive and negative film processing and maps, atlas, catalogue,
printing and etc.
Information Technology
National Geo spatial data base administration, multiple source data integration, IT training,
programming, System development, Technical instrument maintainance on repairing and system adminsitration.
