CARTOGRAPHY
Is concerned with all aspects of mapping processes. It has artistic, scientific
and technical dimensions. It includes the gathering, storage, retrieval,
evaluation, and visualization of geographic information. It also includes the
abstraction or generalization of data to suit with defined mapping scale,
purposes and viewers or clients.
Since EMA's establishment till 1980s all cartographic input has been done in
analogue form. These days the organization is transforming analogue mapping
into that of digital mapping. The department is now applying different
techniques to retrieve a digital input data. Some of the techniques are
digitizing and scanning of the existing maps and producing new maps acquired in
the department of photogrammery.
The department has four sections. These are topographic mapping, map revision
& editing, atlas and thematic mapping & gazetteers and geographical
names study.
